For all the planning that goes into the shots photographers make, sometimes our favourites are happy accidents. This self-portrait was a perfect example.
I usually stand in for a few test shots before my client arrives, which involves setting the camera’s timer, hitting the shutter button, getting myself into position and effecting either a goofy smile or a menacing grimace.
The 10-second timer is usually adequate to get myself in place and ready. This time I mistakenly selected the 2-second timer, and the shutter fired while I thought I still had 8 more seconds to get ready.
I’m not sure what I was looking at down there, or why my arm was behind my head, but this has become one of my favourite selfies. It’s even graced my business cards for a couple of years now.
